*Freda Josephine Baker was an American-born French dancer, singer, and actress. Her career was centered in Europe, mostly in France. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 silent film "Siren of the Tropics". Josephine was also an agent for French intelligence during World War II. As the story goes, Nazi guards were so star-struck by Baker, known in various circles as the "Black Pearl," that they let her slip across the border without a hitch - unaware that she was carrying secret messages written in invisible ink on her sheet music.
